Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala became the first African to win the European Women Champions League medal on Sunday when her Barcelona Femeni crushed Chelsea Women 4-0 to clinch their first Women’s Champions League trophy.
Barcelona Femeni were the dominant side in the early exchanges and wasted no time in asserting their authority on the game as Lieke Mertens’s shot which clattered the bar and hit Melanie Leupolz who put it into her own net in the 1st minute.
Leupolz’s day went from bad to worse as she brought down Jennifer Hermoso inside the bus. Thereafter, Barcona captain Alexia Puttas stepped up and buried it instinctively to make it 2-0 in the opening 14 minutes of the game.
It is First Win For Oshoala and Barcelona In The Women League
Barcelona Women extended their lead even further by scoring two more goals. The boots of Aitana Bonmati and Graham Hansen produced the goals as they were running away with it 4-0 as at the 36th minute. It was looking like game over for Chelsea at the end of first half.
After the restart, Chelsea played with more precision and were able to carve out some chances. But they fluffed their lines.
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala who had scored four goals prior to the final for Barcelona, came on as a substitute in the 71st minute and had a good game until the referee blew the final whistle to confirm the Spanish champions as the winners of the 2020/2021 Women’s Champions League.
At long last, they won the trophy which they have craved for in impeccable fashion.
The good news for Oshoala and Barcelona follows a string of bad news for Chelsea’s male team which following the 1-0 home league loss to Arsenal last Wednesday also lost the FA Cup trophy to Leicester.
The Leicester team had the duo of Nigerian compatriots Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho.
