£4.2m Ibori ‘Money’ Arrives

£4.2million (N1.7 Billion), money supposedly looted from Delta State by former Governor James Ibori and his associates has been returned to the country, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, said on Tuesday.

Malami confirmed the repatriation of the money in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.

Malami, in the statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Gwandu, said that the money was credited into the designated Federal Government account, with the naira equivalent value of the amount on May 10, 2021.

 GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the AGF had earlier signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the repatriation of the loot, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

According to him, “the development was a demonstration of the recognition of reputation Nigeria earns through records of management of recovered stolen Nigerian stolen in the execution of public oriented projects”.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported that the decision of the Federal Government to deploy the Ibori money that was supposedly taken from Delta State to other parts of the country has exercised the polity with assertions that the funds should be returned to Delta State.

A faction of the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU led by Engr. Godwin Omene had written the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, requesting that the funds be used exclusively in Delta State.

Replying, the UPU, Malami drew attention to the fact that Ibori was stalling the repatriation of the confiscated fund through a suit he had brought against the confiscation.
It could not be confirmed as at press time if Ibori decided to withdraw the court process paving way for the return of the money.
