President Muhammadu Buhari has joined sports-loving Nigerians in wishing one of the world’s best goalkeepers, Emmanuel Okala, a happy 70th birthday.

The president’s congratulatory message was issued by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Monday.

Okala who was Nigeria’s reliable goalkeeper for most of the seventies clocked 70 on May 17, 2021. He was also a reliable goal keeper for Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, the team that brought him to national renown before he was called up to national service.

Buhari recalled that Okala, as a goalkeeper for the senior national football team in his prime, represented the best of Nigerian talent and dexterity.

The president thanked the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations Winner for inspiring many with his brand of patriotism and dedication to duty each time he donned the national colour on duty.

According to him, Okala is worthy of honour and celebration as a coach and mentor, who has helped many footballers succeed in their chosen careers.

He prayed Almighty God to grant the elder statesman more memorable years of health and fulfilment in all his endeavours. (NAN)

Meanwhile, GreenWhiteGreen GWG, reports that it is in the same Enugu where Okala came to national renown that a supporter of English FA premiership side Chelsea reportedly collapsed and died while the FA Cup was being handed over to Leicester FC last Saturday.
