73-Year-Old Body Exhumed To Solve Mystery Of Cold Case In Australia

73-Year-Old Body Exhumed To Solve Mystery Of Cold Case In Australia

Police in South Australia (SA) said that a 73-year-old body has been exhumed in an attempt to solve one of the country’s oldest cold cases.

The remains of the Somerton Man were unearthed from a grave in Adelaide’s West Terrace Cemetery, marked `the unknown man’ on Wednesday morning.

The Somerton Man was found slumped against a wall at Somerton Beach in the suburbs of Adelaide on Dec. 1, 1948.

His identity and cause of death had remained a mystery ever since, sparking speculation that he was a spy and making it one of Australia’s most notorious cold cases.

SA police in April announced that Attorney-General Vickie Chapman had given them the green light to exhume the body in the hope that a DNA profile could be developed.

Des Bray, a detective superintendent from the Major Crimes Investigation Branch, said that the exhumation was done with dignity and respect.

“The Somerton Man is not just a curiosity or a mystery to be solved, he’s somebody’s father, son, perhaps grandfather, uncle, brother and that’s why we’re doing this and trying to identify him,’’ he told News Corp Australia.

Following recovery of the remains, Forensic Science SA will attempt to recover a DNA profile from the man.

“If a DNA profile can be obtained a forensic case meeting will be held to formulate the most appropriate DNA strategy, which will then require considerable investigation work to have any chance of identifying the man or where he originated from.’’

Previous requests to recover the man’s remains were denied but Forensic Science SA assistant director of operations Anne Coxon saying that doing so was now worthwhile because technology is light years ahead of the techniques available when this body was discovered in the late 1940s.

“Tests of this nature are often highly complex and will take time, however, we will be using every method at our disposal to try and bring closure to this enduring mystery,’’ she told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

What I Experienced In Detention – FirstNews Editor Narrates

Published

By

The Editor of FirstNews Online Newspaper, Segun Olatunji, has narrated his ordeal in the detention of the Nigerian military.

Recall gunmen suspected to be military officers had invaded Olatunji’s residence at Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos state, on March 15, and took him away.

Since his abduction, there has been a strong outcry from family members, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) calling on President Bola Tinubu to order his immediate release.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/six-prominent-lawmakers-resigns-from-labour-party/

However, on Thursday morning, the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) was said to have released Olatunji after spending two weeks in its custody.

Speaking at a press conference shortly after his release, Olatunji said while in detention, he was interrogated about certain stories that FirstNews had carried.

He added that he was questioned about his stories regarding the Chief of Defence Intelligence and the Chief of Staff to the President.

Olatunji asserted that those behind his detention are part of the government, who are not happy with what FirstNews is doing, and are they bent on punishing him.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/lis-of-countries-with-the-lowest-salary-incomes/

The press briefing was organised by the leaderships of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Press Institute (IPI).

He said: “At first, they put me in a cell. There I was left with leg and hand cuffs. And at a point, one of the officers came and tightened the right leg and the right hand and I was there growing in pain. And they didn’t loosen it until about two or three days later. And at that time, the whole part of my body was getting node. In fact, up till now, I can still feel the pains.

“While in detention, they were asking me questions about certain stories that FirstNews had carried. They first told me that I was one of those abusing the chief of defence intelligence. They didn’t say much about that.

“Then they also asked a story we carried about the Chief of Staff to the president, and that was a major thing. That’s why I told some people earlier that those behind my arrest are people behind the corridors of power, who are not happy with what FirstNews is doing, and are they bent on taking their own pound of flesh.”

Onyema on salary earning between Nigeria and Uk

Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace, has come under fire after he said that those earning two hundred thousand Naira monthly in Nigeria are better off than those earning two thousand pounds in the United Kingdom (UK).

He said this while appearing as a guest on TVC. Speaking on the economic crisis and strength of the Naira, Onyema said he agrees that the bulk of the issue is “artificial”.

“Go to London, if you earn two thousand pounds a month in London, you’re a pauper. What two thousand pounds can afford you is like two hundred thousand Naira.”

“The person earning two hundred thousand Naira in Nigeria is better,” Onyema said.

He added that with earnings of 200,000, a Nigerian can afford a maid, a driver and other domestic staff.

Onyema further affirmed that he believes completely that the Naira has more value than is being projected when compared to other foreign currencies.

The Airpeace Boss appealed to Nigerians to stop demonetising the country.

8-year-old defilement by woman's brother-in-law

A woman has been thrown out of her matrimonial home for refusing to drop the defilement case against her husband’s brother who raped her 8-year-old daughter.

This was disclosed in a post by a Kenyan activist, Njeri Wa Migwi, via her official X handle on Wednesday.

Migwi said the father of the victim is also in support of dropping the case against his brother, preferring to resolve the matter at home.

Her tweet read, “This lady has been thrown out of her marital home for continuing with a defilement case of her 8-year-old child after pressure to drop the case since it’s her brother in law. They want the case to be resolved at home not to bring shame. The way rapists get to have community support.

UCH Workers Protest Working In Darkness

Published

UCH Workers

Workers at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan have expressed their frustration over working in darkness and appealed for urgent assistance from well-meaning individuals and government.

During a congress organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes unions like NASU, NANNM, NUAHP, and others, Mr. Oludayo Olabampe, the JAC Chairman, highlighted the dire situation faced by workers since March 19 when the power supply was disconnected by IBEDC due to alleged debts.

“We need the help of all people because this has gone beyond UCH,” Olabampe emphasized, urging government officials and Nigerians to intervene.

He stressed the challenges of working without electricity, stating, “It is not easy doing our work in darkness…We can’t continue to work in darkness. It’s very risky and dangerous for us to be working without light.”

Olabampe warned of reduced working hours if power was not restored by April 2, adding that a warning strike could follow if the situation persists after a 14-day ultimatum to UCH management.

Dr. Abiodun Adeoye, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, assured that efforts were underway to restore power, including discussions with IBEDC and appeals to the Federal Ministry of Health for intervention.

He highlighted temporary measures taken, such as installing inverters in critical areas and using dedicated generators for essential functions like the theatre, ICU, and labor rooms.

Despite the challenges, the hospital management remains committed to finding both short-term and long-term solutions to the energy crisis, ensuring the well-being of staff, patients, and the public.

Adeleye emphasized that the dismissed officers would face legal consequences in accordance with the corps’s established regulations, Naija News reports.

Furthermore, he revealed that some of the stolen electronic devices have been recovered, and investigations are currently underway to apprehend the robbers who managed to escape upon encountering the Amotekun operatives.

“Today, we have three Amotekun personnel who went through the normal process of court martial and are being dismissed today for professional misconduct,” Adeleye said.

He added, “They cease to be members of Amotekun Ondo state corps as from now, and we will ensure that adequate punishment is meted out to them even after dismissal.

“Out of the seven suspects we are parading today, we have three that were arrested for human trafficking cases, and we have four others that were arrested for housebreaking.

“And we were able to retrieve all the items stolen from their operation, which would be handed over to the rightful owners.

“However, this is to reconfirm that the response to distress calls is actually working for us in order to reduce crime to the minimum.”

He urged residents to assist the corps with more credible intelligence information.

“We want to encourage the good people of Ondo state to give us timely information to work for them.”

An Ogun Special Cultism Court sitting in Abeokuta on Wednesday sentenced a 22-year-old man, Adewale Adenekan, to seven years in prison for belonging to a secret society.

Adenekan, who resides at No. 3, Olaoluwa Close, Arigbanla Arigbajo in Ifo, Ogun, was convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy and membership of an unlawful society.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/27/bobrisky-reacts-as-police-summon-femi-adebayo/

The Magistrate, Mr O.L. Oke, said that prosecution proved  beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant was guilty as charged.

Oke also held that pieces of evidence presented by prosecution were tenable.

He, therefore, sentenced Adenekan to seven years in prison without an option of fine.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/27/son-of-ex-president-jailed-in-us/

“There is no doubt that there has been an increase in the occurrence of cult-related clashes in Ogun, and it is the duty of the court to send a strong message to  others.

“I hope this will serve as a lesson and warning to others not to commit such an offence. There is no benefit in being a member of any proscribed society,” Oke said.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/27/see-the-four-countries-that-have-qualified-for-afcon-2025-group-stage-qualifiers/

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Olaide Rawlings, told the court that the convict committed the offence sometime on Nov. 6 at Arigbajo in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun.

Rawlings said that the convict was invited by the police when some of his cult members were arrested during a cult clash.

She said that the suspects mentioned Adenekan as part of them.

The prosecutor said that the convict confessed that he was a member of the Eiye Confraternity.

She said that the offence contravened Section 45(b)and 35(b) of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Property, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism and other Anti Violence Related Matters Law of 2016.
