There were rife reports on Thursday morning that the dreaded leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau committed suicide on Wednesday when he refused to be captured by armed gunmen of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Wednesday.

Shekau, leader of the dreaded Boko Haram, officially known as Jama’at Ahl as-Sunnah Lid Da’wah Wa’l- Jihad (JAS) was according to reports met his end during a fierce battle in Sambisa Forest with the ISWAP gunmen, Vanguard reported on Thursday.

The confrontation it was alleged came after hundreds of the ISWAP fighters invaded Sambisa with heavy gun trucks during the week hunting for Shekau who headed a faction of Boko Haram.

How Shekau reportedly met his end has remained a matter of dispute but it was alleged that the militant leader behind most of the most gruesome atrocities linked to the group blew himself up as he saw that he had been encircled by the rival ISWAP, fighters.

He was said to have resisted being captured alive during the gun fight with the ISWAP fighters.

While Nigerian military officials have remained mute on the reported Shekau suicide, the social media on Thursday morning was filled with the message of the development with many celebrating the death of the dreaded Boko Haram leader.

An internal Nigeria military security report said: “Unconfirmed source reported that the leader of JAS Abubakar Shekau was dethroned and killed by ISWAP and they have taken over the entire sambisa forest.

“With these development ISWAP are more equipped and funded than JAS. So their mode of operation will change, and there is likely going to experience frequent attacks around Konduga, Bama, Gwoza, Biu LGA’S and part of Adamawa.

“All humanitarians around the axis should be security conscious and be very vigilant.”

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the Nigerian military authorities after having severally announced the death of Shekau in the past would be circumspect on making a further announcement of the death of Shekau.
