Liverpool took a giant step towards their bid to play Champions League football next season after a comprehensive 3-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Liverpool enjoyed a bulk of possession without the killer punch until Roberto Firmino timed his run to perfection and smashed home Andy Robertson’s cross just before the half time break.

The visitors continued to make their opponents subservient in the second half as they got a second through a Nat Philips’ thumping header from a Sadio Mane floating far post delivery.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain wrongfooted the Burnley defence to find space for a shot which squeezed in between the goalkeeper and the post for Liverpool’s third. The Reds were ruthless on the day to leapfrog Leicester City in fourth position on the standings.

In the event that Liverpool defeat Crystal Palace at Anfield, they should be able to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition. Presently, Liverpool are above fifth-placed Leicester on goal difference, with the Reds on +24 and the Foxes on +20 with one game left to go.

Elsewhere, Tottenham were edged 2-1 by Aston Villa while their North London rivals Arsenal romped to a 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
