Atletico Madrid broke the hearts of Real Madrid to clinch the La Liga title on the last day of the season in what would be described as one of the most dramatic title races ever recorded in La Liga history.

The Madrid outfits were battling for the title on the final matchday of the 2020/2021 campaign with just two points separating Atletico Madrid in first position and Real Madrid in second position.

Following a season that saw both Spanish top dogs experience their highs and lows, the title race went down the wire as Atletico Madrid traveled away to Real Valladolid and Real Madrid hosted Villarreal.

In the first half of both encounters, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid trailed 1-0 each until they turned the games around in the second period of their fixtures to produce elusive 2-1 victories.

Zinedine Zidane’s Galacticos had to rely on the ever-reliable Karim Benzema for a world-class equalizer and the razor-sharp shooting boots of  2018 Ballon d’or winner, Luka Modric to grab the winner.

On the other hand, Diego Simeone’s mentees got that scrappy win courtesy of Angel Correa’s goal of individual brilliance and Luis Suarez’s calmly finished goal to hand Atletico the title for the first time since 2014.

A total of 86 points consisting of 26 wins, 8 draws, and 4 draws were garnered by Atletico Madrid to finish above every other team as the champions of La Liga this season and compel a recalcitrant Real Madrid to surrender the title to them.

The win by Atletico Madrid was especially poignant for Luiz Suarez who was sent away from Barcelona at the end of the last season. With a trophy in hand the South American strike could not have hoped for a better ending for the La Liga.
