Controversy Over £4.2m Ibori Loot Deepens

Ibori Loot

The Federal Government has recanted on returning £4.2 million loot recovered from former Governor James Ibori to Delta Government saying the money is still being awaited.

That is despite earlier claims by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami that the money has been received by the Federal Government.

A statement from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) on Wednesday said: “The money is still being awaited after which the issues around it will be resolved before further action is taken. For now, no money has been returned to Delta State”.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the Accountant General of the Federation had while appearing before a committee of the House of Representatives disclosed that the money recovered from Ibori had been repatriated to Delta State on the claim that no state will allow anyone to keep their money.

The denial came after officials of the Delta State Government firmly denied ever receiving the money.

The statement signed by Henshaw Ogubike, Director (Information, Press and Public Relations) explained: “The issue of the £4.2million Ibori loot has not been properly resolved”.

Reacting to the Accountant General’s statement to the National Assembly on Tuesday the loot has been returned to the Delta government, Henshaw Ogubike said: “The AGF was only making general comments about recoveries relating to State Governments”.

Malami had in a statement issued on May 18, 2021 said among others that the “Federal Government of Nigeria has received GBP 4,214,017.66 of the loot associated with the family members of former Delta State Governor, James Ibori,” he said.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that controversy had enveloped the issue after the Federal Government had claimed that part of the agreement with the United Kingdom on the repartriation of the funds was that it would be used for Federal Government priority projects.

Stakeholders in Delta State had been peeved that the projects so designated were outside Delta State and that the money looted from Delta State was going to be used outside of the state.
