Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, who served as political adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan has become the most known politician to fall to the spate of violence that has now trailed Imo State.

The Adamawa born politician was killed by gunmen while on his way from Owerri, the Imo State capital to Abuja.

Details of his death were still unknown but Gulak would be remembered for his pivotal role in the crisis that shadowed the All Progressives Congress, APC primary that displaced the Rochas Okorocha tendency in the state.

Gulak at the time of the primary in 2018 alleged that the Okorocha camp offered him a $2 million bribe to twist the primary to favour the former governor’s preferred successor and son-in-law, Uche Nwosu. Okorocha denied the claim and called Gulak a liar who he said should be in prison for writing the fake results he claimed led to the emergence of Senator Hope Uzodimma as the candidate of the APC for the main election.

Uzodimma contested the election and took fourth position according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC behind Emeka Ihedioha, PDP, Nwosu, AA and Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, APGA. However, the Supreme Court in a ruling in January 2020, declared Uzodimma as the winner of the election and removed Ihedioha who had been inaugurated.

Gulak’s business in Imo State was still unknown as at Sunday morning and his death is bound to for now bury the controversy over the $2 million alleged bribe and his role in the controversial APC primaries.

The police is yet to respond to the development.
