Ronaldo Breaks Euro Goals Records As Portugal Win
By Ekene Dike
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 11 goals in the history of the Euro Championships as Portugal dismantled Hungary 3-0 in their opening Group F fixture of the ongoing tournament.
It was also historic because it was the first match of the tournament to be played with a full crowd.
It was a goalless affair between the defending champions and the valiant Hungarians until Raphael Guerreiro broke the deadlock in the 84th minute.
Before then, Ronaldo had missed what looked like an easy chance as the first half ended when he hit the ball over the crossbar from close range.
Ronaldo’s brace after Guerreiro broke the camel’s back helped him to overturn the previous record of nine goals he had held jointly with Michel Platini before he broke the new 10 goal same record within minutes.
Ronaldo, is also on the brink of becoming the highest goalscorer in international football history.
The five-time Ballon d’or winner is now three goals away from equaling Iran’s Ali Daei record of 109 internationalal goals, however, a success-driven Ronaldo has amassed 106 goals.
Portugal play against Germany in their next game and will slug it out with France in their final game of the group phase in a group that has been dubbed “the group of death” in this edition of the Euro Cup.
