Banditry: Gumi Will Set Nigeria On Fire, Omokri Warns

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, says the divisive remarks of controversial  Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, could precipitate the descent of Nigeria into anarchy.

Omokri was reacting to comment made by Gumi wherein the cleric asserted that there was no basis for comparison between Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and rampaging bandits.

Gumi had said herdsmen and bandits resorted to schoolchildren abductions because of  money while IPOB killed security operatives in the Southeast, adding that drawing similarity between the two groups was unfair.

“IPOB is attacking the police, the army, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other government institutions; killing our men in service.

”And the herdsmen are kidnapping children not to kill them but to get money; so how can you compare somebody who is killing our gallant men directly to somebody who is kidnapping children to make money and not to kill them. Look, we need some fairness in what we are doing.” Gumi said in an interview with Arise TV.

Condemning the Islamic cleric’s comment, the former presidential aide wondered why the government had not arrested Gumi over such unguarded comment, adding that it was unbecoming of the cleric.

Refuting Gumi’s claim, Omokri averred that herdsmen don’t only abduct schoolchildren but have killed many people across the country, warning that such seditious comments could set the country on fire.

“What is wrong with this man? Herdsmen don’t just abduct schoolchildren. Even if that is true (it is not), what is ‘only’ about that? Herdsmen have killed thousands of citizens in every Nigerian state. Gumi may set Nigeria on fire. How can he say this and walk free?” Omokri wrote on his twitter page.

IPOB had been accused of unleashing terror in the south-east, attacking security operatives and public buildings as part of the effort to actualise the age-long agitated Biafra nation.

The security agencies recently vowed to clamp down on the group, alleging that they were responsible for the activities of the unknown gunmen wreaking havoc in the region.

However, the separatists have repeatedly denied their involvement in the unrest and attacks in the troubled south east, stating that IPOB and its security wing had nothing to do with any criminal activity.
