The prospects of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP going into the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State as a united body were in jeopardy on Friday night after the national leadership approved the use of automatic delegates for the June 26, 2021 election to produce the party’s candidate.

The decision has already divided the aspirants in the contest with one of them telling GreenWhiteGreen GWG that he would not partake in the new process.

The automatic delegates comprising serving and former officers of the party at state and national levels, serving and former state and National Assembly members, as well as former governors, governorship candidates and their running mates are estimated at about 221.

The PDP’s decision to use the automatic delegates follows the judgement of an Abuja High Court, which nullified the PDP delegates’ election for the June 26 party primary in Anambra State.

PDP National Organising Secretary, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), in a notice to the 16 PDP aspirants, said the PDP’s “National Working Committee (NWC) …has resolved that only automatic delegates are eligible to vote on Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the Anambra special state congress for the purpose of electing our party’s flag bearer.”

The decision was also echoed by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbobdiyan, who said that two judgments of the court were served to the party.

Besides, he said that the NWC had dissolved all the executive committees in the Anambra State chapter of the PDP.
