Gumi bandits

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi says there’s nothing clandestine or untoward about his meeting with bandits wreaking havoc in the troubled northern region of Nigeria.

Gumi said he was not acting unilaterally or by his own volition, adding that the federal government is privy to his meeting with the monstrous brigands and they provide him with adequate security.

The controversial cleric was reacting to the hoopla and media frenzy his invitation by the department of state security (DSS) has generated.

The cleric was invited by the SSS after he alleged that security agents are sabotaging effort to tackle banditry in the north.

Gumi, while speaking on Arise TV earlier in the week, said some soldiers supply drugs and weapons to bandits to engage in killing and kidnapping for ransom.

But speaking after after Jumaat prayer at Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna State, Gumi denied claims that he was invited or arrested by the SSS.

“Nobody invited me for questioning or any arrest, I can say that categorically,” Mr Gumi told Channels TV. “Since I ventured into the forest, I went there with full security, the police, with the knowledge of the DSS, traditional rulers, the Fulani leaders, I never went alone.”

Mr Gumi added that all along he and government officials have been engaging the bandits and their is no cause for alarm from the public.

“All along, I have been doing it with the government and there is no difference between us and the authority. So people should have their peace,” the cleric said.

For months on end, the controversial cleric has become a cynosure in public discourse owing to his persistent justification of the nefarious actions of bandits who have abducted schoolchildren, travellers and residents, and in some cases killed their victims.

He once advocated for amnesty for the bandits, noting that they were victims of circumstances.

GreenWhiteGreen also reported how Gumi objected to and decried comparing bandits to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), explaining that the actions and offences of IPOB were graver and deadlier than those of bandits, whom he claimed abduct people for money.
