5 Things You May Not Know About IPOB’s Nnamdi Kanu Rearrest

The arrest of the Indigenous Group of Biafra, IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, took many Nigerians by surprise. At first, most people, especially IPOB members didn’t believe the news until more facts started emerging to validate the report.

According to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), Nnamdi Kanu was arrested and repatriated to Nigeria on Sunday (June 27, 2021).

GWG.ng was one of the foremost media houses to report the news on Tuesday (June 29, 2021). Here are five things we think you may not know about his arrest:

1. Where was Nnamdi Kanu arrested?

The federal government of Nigeria remained mute on how and where Nnamdi Kanu was arrested. However, there are different insinuations. Some of the countries he was reported to have been arrested include:

• Czech Republic
• Ethiopia
• Holland
• Brazil
• United Kingdom (UK)
• Kenya

Since the government has refused to disclose the details of his arrest, judging by Kanu’s family and IPOB’s statements, Kenya appears to be the most legit out of these five countries.

GWG earlier reported Kanu’s brother, Kingsley Kanu, to have said; “My brother has been subject to extraordinary rendition by Kenya and Nigeria. They have violated the most basic principles of the rule of law. Extraordinary rendition is one of the most serious crimes states can commit. Both Nigeria and Kenya must be held to account. I demand justice for my brother, Nnamdi Kanu”.

2. What are his alleged offences?

IPOB’s Nnamdi Kanu is charged with 11-count treasonable felony, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms. The case is pending before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Nigerian government has also alleged Nnamdi Kanu instigated 55 violent attacks across the South East and South South Zones in four months.

3. British Government’s Stand

Nnamdi Kanu who was born on September 25, 1967, possesses both Nigerian and British passports. Dean Hurlock, a spokesperson of the British High Commission had noted that London was “in the process of seeking clarification” of his arrest from the Nigerian government.

Hurlock also noted that BHC “stands ready to provide “consular” assistance”. Meanwhile, the UK manual on ‘Support for British nationals abroad: A guide’ stated that; “We cannot get you out of prison or detention, nor can we get special treatment for you because you are British. If however you are not treated in line with internationally accepted standards we will consider approaching local authorities. This may include if your trial does not follow internationally recognised standards for a fair trial or is unreasonably delayed compared to local cases”.

4. Nigeria’s Federal Government Threats

Although the Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded Nnamdi Kanu in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody with his case adjourned till July 26, FG threatened all his (Kanu’s) collaborators won’t be spared.

The minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, however assured the embattled Biafra leader will get a fair hearing and treatment.

5. Call for IPOB’s members solidarity

Following Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest, the media and publicity secretary of the group, Emma Powerful, urged members to show solidarity with him at his next court appearance on July 26.
