Parallel Kwara APC Congresses

The fight between Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq over the soul of the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC has gotten messier with the minister of information dubbing the governor as a ‘one-chance’ governor.

The minister who led the otoge revolution that brought the governor to power in 2019 spoke to party supporters at a rally in Kwara.

The governor and the minister have been in a struggle over the future and leadership of the party with both men splitting the party executive in the state into two.

The chairman of the party, Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa, a long time associate of Lai Mohammed has remained with Lai Mohammed despite the dissension by a sizeable proportion of the State Working Committee, SWC.

Several moves by some members of the party executive allegedly aligned to the governor to remove BOB as party chairman have remained controversial.

Until recently, Governor Abdulrazaq and Lai Mohammed had shied away from making their quarrel personally public as they allowed their surrogates to do the fighting. That was until the governor during a recent book launch alleged financial indiscretions on the part of the Lai Mohammed group alleging that several funds channeled to his 2019 governorship campaign did not reach him alleging that the funds were squandered.

His assertion was immediately rebuffed by the Lai Mohammed camp who accused him of lying.

Lai Mohammed in his first public reaction has now dubbed the governor a one chance governor. The minister spoke in Yoruba to his support base.

“It has gotten to the point where we have to speak out. We have been pushed to the wall, and we have no choice but to come out and expose their lies and pretensions,” Mohammed said.

“It was immediately after the governor emerged as the party’s candidate for the election that it dawned on us that we had entered one chance.

“But despite all the warnings from concerned party leaders and others who had reservations about his choice, our reaction then was that no matter what, his choice was better than where we were coming from. But we were wrong.”

Responding to the allegation of financial impropriety, Lai Mohammed said:

“I single-handedly, by the grace of God, with the support of friends, politicians and associates raised all the money for all the elections we had in Kwara during that period, starting from the by-election that brought in honourable Raheem Olawoye (Ajuloopin) as rep member,” Lai Mohammed said.

“Nobody gave the party a dime for logistics apart from what I gave. I distributed 500 motorcycles and 200 vehicles and many of the beneficiaries are seated here today. I challenge them to explain to Nigerians and all of you what happened to the balance of the N70 million that Ajuloopin refused to give us from the N150 million that I facilitated to prosecute the elections.

“When it was time for the governorship election, we didn’t see him (the governor) and we could not wait. So, we financed the election with the money raised. They got there today and forgot those who worked hard to get them there, but rather selling lies and dummies.”
