17 Kidnapped Kaduna Students Rescued

17 of about 160 students of the  Bethel Baptist High School, Kaduna kidnapped early on Monday have escaped or been rescued, it has emerged.

The Punch quoted Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalije as confirming the return of the 17 to the school after the latest school kidnap in Kaduna State that happened when gunmen attacked the Baptist school, located at Damishi town of Chikun Local Government Area in Kaduna State.

A teacher at the school, Emmanuel Paul, told AFP that the bandits took away 165 students.

On his part, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Kaduna Chapter, Rev. John Hayab, told NAN that as of Friday, there were 180 boarding students in the school.

NAN quoted Police PRO Jalije as saying “17 of the students have been rescued.”

According to Jaliye the exact number of students abducted by the bandits had yet to be ascertained, adding that details would be made public in due course.

“Tactical police teams went after the kidnappers,” he added. “We are still on the rescue mission.”

According to Hayab, who is also a Baptist, 26 students had so far returned and he was hopeful that more would escape from the bandits.

“The kidnappers took away 140 students, only 25 students escaped. We still have no idea where the students were taken,” Emmanuel Paul, a teacher at the school told AFP.

Bethel Baptist High School, a co-education college established by Baptist church in 1991 is located at Maramara village in Chikun Local Government Area, south of Kaduna town, the north’s political capital that that has been under the siege of kidnappers

Monday’s school abduction at the Bethel School came hours after bandits attacked a hospital in Kaduna and took away eight patients and employees. Those abducted from the hospital were yet to be released as at Monday afternoon.
