The British parliament is set to probe the circumstances under which Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was repatriated to Nigeria it emerged on Tuesday.

Kanu, who is also a British citizen, was arrested penultimate Sunday and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for alleged treason. He is believed to have been apprehended in Kenya following a bait allegedly set up for him by Nigerian intelligence service.

The move by the British Parliament to weigh into the issue following the stonewall the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, received when he brought up the issue with Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s minister of justice and attorney general.

In a schedule posted on its website, the UK parliament said it will discuss “the circumstances surrounding the transfer of Mr Kanu to Nigeria against his will”, among other issues.

The document disclosed that Lord Alton of Liverpool will be raising the issue at the House of Lords and will ask the British government on Kanu’s repatriation to Nigeria.

“To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of (1) the alleged role of the government of Kenya in the detention and alleged mistreatment of Nigerian activist Nnamadi Kanu, (2) the circumstances surrounding the transfer of Mr Kanu to Nigeria against his will, and (3) of any assistance being provided to him by the high commission in Abuja,” the document reads.

The document also states that the question, tagged ‘HL1665’ was tabled on July 5, 2021 will be “due for answer” by the “relevant government department” by July 19, 2021.

The return of Nnamdi Kanu to Nigeria has been laced with controversy following the unclear circumstances under which he was brought back to the country.

IPOB has said that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu was betrayed by the Kenyan government.
