RMD @ 60: Old Things Are Passed Away

Veteran actor, Richard Mofe Damijo, RMD has said that despite his great achievements, nothing compares to having a family saying also that he is now a Christian with old things in his life passing away.

The popular actor said these during a recent interview, The Nation has reported.

RMD noted that all the things he has achieved cannot be compared to his great accomplishment which is family.

“So, all these things that you think I have achieved or done, for me it is nothing, like zero. My biggest accomplishment for me now is my family,” said RMD.

Speaking further, RMD who turned 60 on July 6 disclosed how his parents died before the age of 60, adding that he is happy to have broken the specter of death in his family.

“None of my parents lived to be 60. So, life for me is just about to get started. There’s been a spectre of death around my life, that’s what I’ve been dealing with last year till this year. When I turned 59, that was a big deal for me, a big deal for me! My mom died at 59 and my father died at 57/58,” he disclosed.

“So, it was like ‘can I break it?’ When people see me and I go on a weight loss, people think that it is healthy. Both my parents were diabetic and hypertensive; I don’t want to be that. I don’t want to be diabetic and hypertensive; I want to be healthier. At least give me a fighting chance to change that whole cycle.

“Yes, I’m a Christian now, so, I have broken that yoke, but I have to also help myself. Becoming 60 for me is even a bigger deal. So, when July comes and I become 60, you know how the Bible says old things have passed away? I will truly, truly become a new man because, for me, that is when I will make a bucket list.”

On Saturday, July 3, a group of Nigerian scholars led by Jamin Ohwovoriole held an academic session to discuss RMD’s works and contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The event, tagged Real men dance, the significance of Richard Mofe-Damijo, also had leading thespian, Joke Silva, and film producer/art enthusiast, Bolanle Austen-Peters, as panelists.

Silva and Austen-Peters joined Segun Ojewuyi, Niyi Coker, Mabel Evwierhoma, Onookome Okome, Kole Ade-Odutola, and Obi Nwakama to discuss the contributions of RMD to the industry as a thespian.

In an exclusive chat with The Nation, the convener of the session, Jamin Ohwovoriole, said, “The event commemorates RMD’s 60th birthday, and it celebrated Richard Mofe-Damijo, an accomplished thespian, through the lenses of scholarship as well as his artistic contribution, which could have major significance in the context of the Nigerian entertainment industry economics.”

The convener also stressed that the session, aside from celebrating RMD’s milestone age, afforded individuals who need scholarly work on RMD to get adequate content and materials as well as for future purposes.

The event also had RMD as the special guest of honour.
