Buhari and Buni Put Tinubu In Permanent Suspense
The 2023 presidential aspiration of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was at the weekend reported to be in suspense after it emerged that the national leadership of the party had written the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC seeking an indefinite postponement of the scheduled congresses of the party.
The congresses were meant to kick-start the formation of new executives of the party across the various levels of the party from the wards to the national leadership.
Though the party had scheduled the congresses to start on 24th July with the ward congresses, the announcement still left a date for the convention to elect the national executive of the party hanging.
Sources including party stakeholders told GreenWhiteGreen GWG that the silence on a date for the national convention all but meant that there was no sincere approach towards electing a new national executive.
“Mark my words, there is going to be no convention this year and Buni is going to continue as caretaker chairman and will be the one to supervise the convention to produce the 2023 presidential candidate,” a commissioner in one of the federal agencies told GreenWhiteGreen GWG.
Sources revealed that the president is satisfied with Governor Mala Buni heading the party at the moment and had been persuaded that having a convention to elect national officers and another one to elect a presidential candidate within the period of one year would be too damaging for the party.
However, that permutation is against the interests of some party chieftains, and notably, those aligned to Tinubu who believe that the present structure of the party would not help to throw the presidential ticket in their way. For them, only a new set of officers across the various tiers would be satisfactory for them and hence the whispering campaign in that camp for a new set of national officers.
It is also no secret that Buni who has been working in close affinity with the anti-Tinubu camp within the party.
The fear of the Tinubu camp was made real at the weekend when it was reported that the party had in a secret memo to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC announced the postponement of the ward congresses as earlier scheduled.
The news as reported by GreenWhiteGreen GWG meant that the Tinubu camp would have to remain in suspense as to when their agitation for a new set of national officers to help their agenda would be realized.
It was indeed not surprising that the secretary of the party, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, who used to be a member of the Tinubu camp before his appointment was livid at INEC for supposedly leaking what he said was a secret memo.
The development inevitably has made it that with President Muhammadu Buhari calling the shots through Buni that Tinubu would have to remain in suspense as concerning his 2023 aspiration.
