How to Identify An Unknown Caller

It can be frustrating to see an unknown number calling you, or worse, a missed call from an unknown caller. Different thoughts run through your mind. Who is this? Should I call back? How important could this call be?

With the high level of insecurity in Nigeria and different means employed by scammers to exploit people, there is no other time you need to be more careful in answering calls from unknown numbers. 

Here are some ways you may find out the identity of an unknown caller:

Google Search

Search the phone number on Google. If no result, you may try to include the country code such as +234 for Nigeria and +1 for the United States (US). You are likely to get a result if the unknown caller’s number belongs to a company (included on the company’s website) for instance. It may also appear in Google search results if another internet user referenced it, probably in the comment section of a website.

Social Media

Most social media platforms want to make connections easier. This is why they permit the use of phone numbers to sign up or include in bio. You can save the unknown caller contact on your phone and check the identity via WhatsApp (you may delete afterwards). You can also search the number directly on Facebook or Twitter. Associated accounts should pop up in the search result if available.

Phone Apps

There are numerous phone apps you can use to identify an unknown caller. One of the most popular in Nigeria is TrueCaller. It is available to download for free in Apps Store (Google Play Store and Apple Store).

Reverse Phone Lookup

It is not impossible to receive a call from an international number. To try identify this, reverse phone lookup sites may come in handy. Try online platforms like Whitepages.com, Address.com, and anywho.com. Most of these sites share not just the name of the caller but also the home address.

Note: All of the above tips can only work for unknown callers with their phone number displayed. They are not applicable for calls with hidden Caller IDs.
