Dad

Are you going to be a dad? Or you just become one and confused about how to handle everything? We can relate. It is a journey accompanied by both bewilderment and frustration. But if you know what to expect and how to handle things, it is the most fun and memorable time of any man’s life.

Here are some parenting tips for you:

Preparing for Delivery

Yes, the woman is the one going into the labour room. But it is memorable for you to be with her when this is done. It gives you a chance to offer emotional support and at the same time, be among the first to see your baby come alive.

Schedule a tour of the labour room with your doctor. It makes you relate with the environment and smell of the room.

Get Involved from the Beginning

At least for the first week, a dad is expected to be with his wife, helping her with nappy changing and bathing. This will save you future frustration as you would have had some experience doing these things.

Child Feeding

During the first few days, a baby’s stomach is very tiny. On Day 10, the size of the baby’s stomach is about an egg. You need to know this in case you will be bottle-feeding the child. Only a little feeding is required. If the child after feeding is fussy, try patting the back gently while bumping the baby.

They Need Sleep

Babies need about 16 to 20 hours of sleep in a day, at least for the first five months. During this period, they are active sleepers. So, it is not unusual for them to frequently wake up crying. You may want to leave them for a few minutes before rushing to pick them up. They are likely to sleep back when not disturbed.

Learn Your New Baby Cues

Babies can’t talk yet. They instead express their wants and needs using cues such as finger or body movements including facial expressions. They also make sounds. You need to pay close attention to all of these. If there is a strange cue you can’t read meaning to, ask your wife.
