Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, says embattled frontline Yoruba Nation proponent, Sunday Igboho, has done nothing wrong by seeking asylum in country where there’s no threat to his life.

Afenifere also extolled the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, for weighing in on the imbroglio and the activist’s predicament.

They commend the monarchs for sending delegations to Cotonou, Benin Republic, as Igboho trial resumes at the Cour De’appal De Cotonou.

The group issued the commendations in a statement titled, ‘Sunday Igboho Court Hearing: Afenifere Commends Olubadan, Ooni, Other Obas’. It was signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Jare Ajayi.

Recall that Oba Ogunwusi set up a 28-member committee made up of eminent Yoruba sons to look into the travails of Igboho, amongst other issues facing the people of the South-West geopolitical zone.

Similarly, the Olubadan inaugurated a committee to ensure the rights of Igboho, who hailed from Oyo State and was based in Ibadan, were protected within the ambit of the law.

The separate delegations sent by the two monarchs arrived in Cotonou on Monday to observe the court proceeding in the case against the activist.

In its statement, Afenifere lamented that “what is now regarded as Sunday Igboho travail ought not occur at all if there had been good governance in Nigeria and people are not harassed without any just cause”.

“It is so sad that President Muhammadu Buhari administration is concentrating on hunting and harassing those who are seeking relief from the oppressive situation in Nigeria while shying away from tackling the menaces of kidnapping, terrorism and antics bordering on ethnic-cleansing,” the group added.
