Ebeano Supermarket Fire: Nigerians In Dilemma On Putting Blame

Published

on

As the smouldering embers of what’s left of the popular Ebeano supermarket, Abuja dissolve into ashes, facts of what led to the inferno that caused the destruction of goods worth billions of naira have emerged.

The outcome of investigation and the release of the CCTV footage has put many Nigerians in bewielderment given the revelation that a nine year old girl set the Ebeano Supermarket ablaze.

Little initially was known of what caused the conflagration that razed down the supermarket, which was located in  Lokogoma area of the FCT, when the incident occurred last week, but a CCTV footage captured how the supermarket was set afire.

In a trending video online, a teenager, who was said to have gone to Ebeano Supermarket with her mother, was seen with a lighter walking down one of the aisles, she stopped by one of the racks on which goods were placed, fired up the lighter and dropped it in between the goods on the rack which contained inflammable and combustible items.

In another video, the girl admitted to setting the Ebeano Supermarket ablaze. She said she had accompanied her mother to the store to get something for her sister but left them to go carry out the heinous act.

However, reactions have begun to trail the video has Nigerians share their views and perspectives on the incident.

While some apportioned blame to owner of Ebeano Supermarket for not doing enough by investing in appropriate equipment and facilities that would have forestalled the inferno, others excoriated the teenager for such detestable act, attributing her action to poor upbringing and parental irresponsibility.

There are some who inferred that the incident was premeditated and a pure case of economic sabotage, noting that the child was used in perpetrating the despicable act.

Hike In School Fees: NANS Gives Seven-Day Ultimatum To Governor Adeleke

Published

on

By

Governor Ademola Adeleke has been handed a seven-day ultimatum by the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) regarding a 100 percent hike in school fees at Osun state-owned institutions.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, the Chairman of NANS in Osun State, Ogungbe Taiwo, declared that during a significant assembly held at the Federal Polytechnic Ede, it was disclosed that the Osun State Government has been deceiving students with empty pledges concerning their welfare.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/why-im-better-than-drake-kendrick-lamar-kanye-west/

Taiwo criticized Governor Adeleke for neglecting student welfare and failing to include students in his government, demanding the reversal of over 100% fee increases in Osun State-owned institutions and expressing disappointment in the lack of palliatives and infrastructure improvements.

The student body threatened mass mobilization and relocation of their Secretariat to the Governor’s office if their demands were not met within seven days, stressing the need for immediate action to address the deteriorating conditions on campuses and calling on the government to prioritize student concerns.

Taiwo said: “Governor Adeleke failed to prioritise the welfare of the students and include us in his government. We demand reversal of increased fees of state-owned institutions. The government has increased fees by over 100 per cent. The state also failed to give us palliative outside what the Federal Government gave us.

Students demand the immediate reversal of increased school fees in Osun State-owned institutions. It’s disheartening seeing the pain on students in this present hardship we all faced. We hereby call for a total reversal of the increased tuition fees; failure to act promptly will result in mass mobilization by the student body and relocation of our Secretariat to the office of the Governor.

“We express deep disappointment towards the government of Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke for neglecting student welfare. Despite initial hope, anti-student policies have been implemented, and we are still lacking behind other Southwest state ,we urge the government to prioritize student concerns.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/ncc-releases-new-deadline-for-nin-sim-linkage/

“We reiterate our demand for adequate palliatives and infrastructure improvements to enhance the learning environment on campuses. The Road networks across the tertiary institutions are in a very terrible state, and yet nothing is done to make them pliable. Most of our lecture halls are below standard.

“Despite our efforts through letters to government authorities, indifference persists. Therefore, we issue a seven-day ultimatum to the government to address our demands. Failure to do so will result in peaceful protests and roadblocks in Osogbo, the state capital.

“These demands represent the collective voice of students across higher institutions in Osun State, endorsed by the student union presidents in the state. We urge the government to heed our calls and prioritize the welfare and rights of Nigerian students.

Certificate Forgery: WAEC Releases ‘True’ Copies Of Gov Uzodimma’s Certificate, Results Emerged

Published

By

Uzodimma WAEC
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has submitted certified true copies (CTCs) of the statement of result and certificate belonging to Imo State governor Hope Uzodimma before the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja.

GWG.ng reports that the examination body complied with the tribunal’s subpoena to produce and present the documents on behalf of Governor Uzodimma.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/why-earning-n200000-in-nigeria-better-than-2000-in-uk-onyeama/

The Head of Administration at WAEC Headquarters, Omifenwa Tajudeen Tunbosu, presented the documents to the tribunal yesterday.

The first document provided by Tubosun was a CTC of Uzodimma Goodhope Odidika’s West African Examinations Council General Certificate of Education, bearing certificate No. SG 904497 from June 1982.

The second document was a CTC of Uzodimma Goodhope Odidika’s confirmation of the statement of result, which was initially sent by WAEC to the office of the Senate President on December 18, 2014, and delivered on January 7, 2015.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/ncc-releases-new-deadline-for-nin-sim-linkage/

Tunbosu also attested in front of the tribunal that Governor Hope Uzodimma is the rightful owner of the WAEC certificate and verified its authenticity.

The tribunal, presided over by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, accepted the documents as evidence.

One of the key points of contention raised by the PDP and Anyanwu is Uzodimma’s alleged lack of qualification.

They have accused Uzodimma of forging his WAEC certificate.

Why Earning N200,000 In Nigeria Better Than £2000 In UK – Onyeama

Published

on

By

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has claimed that any Nigerian earning N200,000 per month is better than someone making £2000 in London.

The Air Peace boss stated that anyone earning £2000 a month in London is a pauper because the amount one can afford is like what N2000 can buy in Nigeria.

Onyema stated that the naira has more value than it’s been projected and called on Nigerians to have more faith in their national currency.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/ncc-releases-new-deadline-for-nin-sim-linkage/

GWG.ngreports that Onyeama stated this in an interview with TVC News on Wednesday.

He said, “I support what Mr. Cardoso said. He once said that the whole thing is artificial and that the naira has more value than it’s been projected, and I believe him.

“Go to London, if you earn £2000 a month in London you are a pauper because what the £2000 can afford you is like N2000 because a Nigerian will sit down here and calculate 2000 to a pound and think he can have an N4million.

“The person earning N200,000 in Nigeria is better. You can have a maid, you can have a driver.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/update-caf-confirms-dates-for-champions-league-confederation-cup-finals/

“What I am trying to say is, we should stop stigmatizing our country, we must love our country, we must fight for it and must support private investments.”

Speaking further, Onyema asserted that airlines needed free access to dollars, saying that the government needed to make that more realistic.

He said, “We need government support for Nigerian airlines. Everything about aviation is dollars. If you don’t have access to dollars, you cannot move forward. Remember, these airlines were competing with abroad, they access loans in their countries at 3 per cent. In Nigeria, I am getting my loan at 30 per cent.

“At the same time, the Nigerian airline is dead on arrival when it comes to insurance. They stigmatise my country because insurance is done abroad. So what we use in ensuring one aircraft is what those bigger airlines all over the world will use to ensure about eight aircraft.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/breaking-naira-crashes-to-n1309-1-at-official-market/

“Another way of supporting the airlines is the removal of the city hopping we’re doing in this country. We’re putting a strain on the naira. President Tinubu knows that the multi-city hopping of foreign airlines into his country is creating problems for him.

“The president should call for immediate review of these bilateral air services agreements (BASA). It is not even supposed to be a part of BASA. Countries don’t do it.

“In my country, they do city hopping, and at the end of the day, these foreign airlines amass a lot of money and put a strain on the dollar and the naira, and they start blackmailing the country.”

NCC Releases New Deadline For NIN-SIM Linkage

Published

on

By

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has again extended the SIM-NIN linkage deadline by one week.

A senior official of the commission confirmed the latest development to journalists.

Naija News understands that the disconnection process for SIM cards not linked with NIN was implemented in phases, with the second phase initially set for today, March 29.

The initial phase occurred on February 28, 2024, following NCC’s instruction to telecom operators to deactivate the services of numerous subscribers who had not linked their SIMs with their NINs.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/why-we-arrested-killed-17-soldiers-in-delta-state-traditional-ruler-opens-up/

NCC announced in December 2023 that the third phase will kick off on April 15, 2024.

However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) expressed concerns about the fairness of disconnecting any subscribers, citing difficulties some have faced in linking their SIMs with their NINs.

NATCOMS’ President, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, therefore, appealed that the NCC extend the deadline scheduled for the disconnection of telephone lines not yet linked to NIN beyond Friday, March 29, 2024.

In a conversation with Daily Trust on Thursday night, a senior representative of NCC mentioned that the commission had decided to prolong the deadline for the second phase by one week due to the Easter public holiday.

The official, who chose to remain anonymous, stated that the telecommunications companies had received instructions not to deactivate any subscribers until after one week, starting from Friday, March 29.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/update-caf-confirms-dates-for-champions-league-confederation-cup-finals/

“The telecom operators will not bar any subscriber yet. We will only be talking about barring after a week from tomorrow. Yes, technically, we can say the deadline has been extended by a week,” the NCC official revealed.

Another high-ranking NCC employee, who confirmed the initial official’s statements, told reporters that the NCC acquiesced to requests from certain civil society organizations and telecommunications rights groups to extend the deadline.

This decision was made in response to the internet disruptions encountered in the country two weeks ago.

Why I Enjoy Working With President Tinubu – Wike

Published

on

By

THE Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, expressed excitement for the opportunity to be part of the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

GWG.ng reports that Wike made this known after inspecting ongoing rural road projects in Bwari and Abuja Municipal area councils in Abuja.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/nigeria-in-darkness-as-national-grid-collapses-fourth-time-in-2024/

The former Governor noted that Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ is working, particularly as it concerns the area councils, rural parts and not just cities.

The minister also commended Tinubu for his ‘tremendous support’ of the FCT Administration in providing critical infrastructure and quality services to the residents of FCT.

Wike added that it gladens his heart that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is practical, not just theory.

He said, “I am very glad to say that the renewed hope agenda is working, particularly as it concerns the area councils.

“The renewed hope Agenda is not only for the cities; it is also to make sure that those in the rural areas feel part of the administration.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/29/kfc-shutdown-gbenga-daniels-son-debola-slams-critics/

“We have been to Bwari and we attest to the fact that is a very difficult terrain. No wonder people talk of insecurity.

“But with the construction of that road, you can say that there is hope. I feel so happy that I am part of this administration and that people can see changes.

“Again, we are here in Saburi, and you can see the work going on. When we came to inaugurate the road, you could see the enthusiasm among the people.

“We are happy that everything we have started will be completed soon.

“This attest to the fact that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope” agenda is not just in theory; it’s practical – ‘seeing is believing.”

Okuama: Wanted Delta Ruler Surrenders To Police

Published

Okuama monarch, kolo submits to police

In order to prove his innocence in the controversy surrounding the murder of 17 military men in Okuama, the Ovie of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom, Ughelli South local government area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty, Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo, Urhukpe 1, has submitted himself to the State Police Command.

Recall that GWG.ng earlier reported that the monarch was one of the eight persons declared wanted by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) over the gruesome killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama community in Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom of Ughelli South LGA of Delta State.

Ikolo reported Thursday evening at the Delta State Police Command in Asaba and was received by the Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi.

The monarch had been living in London, United Kingdom, before his recent selection and crowning as Ovie of Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom.

He was presented with a staff of office by Delta State governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in November last year.

GWG.ng gathered that the monarch had not returned to his kingdom since his coronation ceremony over a legal tussle arising from his selection following the passage of the former traditional ruler.

Briefing journalists before surrendering himself to the Police, the monarch denied any involvement in the killing of the 17 soldiers, comprising four senior officers and 13 soldiers of the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian Army.

Ikolo therefore called on the federal and Delta State governments to constitute an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the killing of the military personnel within the Okuama community of his kingdom.

The Delta monarch further stated that he decided to present himself to the authorities to prove to the Nigerian government and the international community that he had no hand or connection with those who murdered the soldiers.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that the monarch had surrendered to the Police.

Okuama, an Urhobo community, is one of the over 40 communities under the rulership of the monarch in Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom.

Nigeria In Darkness As National Grid Collapses Fourth Time In 2024

Published

on

Electrocuted

Nigeria encountered a widespread power outage as its primary electricity network, managed from Osogbo, Osun State, suffered a breakdown around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, leaving countless households and businesses in darkness.

GWG.ng reports that this marked the fourth grid collapse within the first three months of the year, exacerbating the persistent challenges in Nigeria’s power sector. Reports from distribution companies (DisCos) across the country’s 36 states indicated that their power supply systems were incapacitated, resulting in extensive power outages nationwide. According to Leadership, electricity production on the grid, previously at 2,984 megawatts by 4 p.m. on Thursday, plummeted to zero within an hour. By 5 p.m., all 21 power plants connected to the grid had ceased operations.

This latest incident underscores another setback for the electricity sector in Nigeria, which has struggled despite efforts to enhance it through privatization and plagued the nation in darkness. The grid has witnessed 141 collapses in the past decade alone, revealing the entrenched challenges facing the industry. At the time of reporting, only the Azura Power Plant was actively contributing to the grid, albeit with a modest output of 54 megawatts. Meanwhile, major power generation plants such as Egbin, Afam, Geregu, and others remained inactive, exacerbating the country’s electricity shortage.

Why CBN Increased Minimum Capital Requirements For Banks

Published

on

By

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released new minimum capital requirements for commercial, merchant and non-interest banks.

In a statement on Thursday by its Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, Hakama Sidi Ali, the apex bank pegged the minimum capital base for commercial banks with international authorisation at N500 billion.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/why-i-became-a-transgender-bobrisky/

The CBN added that national authorisation commercial banks need to meet an N200bn threshold, while those with regional authorisation are expected to achieve an N50bn capital base.

The apex bank also disclosed that the new requirements for non-interest banks with national and regional authorisations are N20bn and N10bn, respectively.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/27-year-old-man-arraigned-for-allegedly-raping-a-20-year-old-woman/

It said the increase was necessary due to prevailing macroeconomic challenges and headwinds occasioned by external and domestic shocks.

Recall that a circular signed by the Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Haruna Mustafa, to all commercial, merchant, and non-interest banks and promoters of proposed banks emphasized that all banks are required to meet the minimum capital requirement within 24 months commencing from April 1, 2024, and terminating on March 31, 2026.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/28/why-google-blocked-5-5bn-adverts/

According to the circular, the move, initially disclosed by the CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, in his address to the Annual Bankers’ Dinner in November 2023, was to enhance banks’ resilience, solvency, and capacity to continue supporting the growth of the Nigerian economy.

To enable them to meet the minimum capital requirements, the CBN urged banks to consider inject fresh equity capital through private placements, rights issues and/or offers for subscription; Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As); and/or upgrade or downgrade of license authorisation.

Furthermore, the circular disclosed that the minimum capital shall comprise paid-up capital and share premium only. It stressed that the new capital requirement shall not be based on the Shareholders’ Fund.

The CBN circular said the minimum capital requirement for proposed banks shall be paid-up capital, adding that the new minimum capital requirement shall apply to all new applications for banking licenses submitted after April 1, 2024.
