Group Urges Obiora Okonkwo To Re-enter Anambra Guber Race

A pressure group, Anambra Rescue Committee has urged Dr Obiora Okonkwo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to re-enter the November 6 governorship race in the state.

The group made the call at a news conference held on Tuesday in Onitsha.

Okonkwo who doubles as the chairman of the Dome Entertainment Center, Abuja and chairman of United Nigeria Airline came second in PDP governorship primary held on June 26 in Awka.

But Mr Azubike Anazor, chairman of the committee said that Okonkwo could re-enter the race by taking advantage of the substitution window provided by the Electoral Act.

Anazor said that Okonkwo could approach any of the.listed parties for the Nov. 6 governorship election, adding that he has wonderful qualities required in a person worthy of occupying the position of Anambra governor.

“Dr Obiora Okonkwo is a grassroots man with doctorate degree in political science. He is a humane character whose activities have distinguished as a man to be trusted with public office”, he said.

Anazor who said that the appeal was devoid of any personal interest said that the manifesto already articulated by Okonkwo was capable of addressing the problems of the state.

He further explained that the decision of the group with membership spread across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state was due to the obvious signs that.litigations which might adversely affect PDP in the forthcoming election.

“Any discerning observer of the recent and ongoing political developments in Anambra would noticed that the state governorship election selected for Nov.6 will not from all indications produce a governor to be generally accepted to our people.

“The recent gubernatorial primaries of the major political parties in APC, PDP and APGA have resulted in litigations.

“The litigations and counter litigations might go beyond Nov.6 and this ugly state of affairs if not arrested now will compel Anambra people to accept any manner of person as governor”, he said.

He called on Okonkwo to consider their appeal and act fast before it is late as higher population of the state desire to have him as a successor to the incumbent Gov. Willie Obiano comearch 2022.
