Yoruba Nation: DSS Denies Detaining 12 Associates of Sunday Igboho

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied detaining twelve (12) associates of Yoruba secessionist agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a Sunday Igboho, following a raid on his house.

Lawyers including Pelumi Olajengbesi and Allen Sowore representing the associates had claimed 12 persons were detained by the DSS when the security operatives raided Igboho’s Soka residence in Ibadan, Oyo state.

They gave the names of those being detained as Abdullateef Ofeyagbe, Amuda Babatunde (alias Lady K), Tajudeen Erinoyen Diekola Ademola, Abideen Shittu, Jamiu Noah, Ayobami Donald, Adelabe Usman, Oluwapelumi Kunle, Raji Kazeem, Taiwo Opeyemi and Bamidele Sunday.

However, owing to their detention, the Yoruba activist’s supporters through their lawyer, Pelumi Olajemgbesi, filed an application asking the court to “inquire into the circumstances constituting grounds of their arrest and detention since July 2, 2021, and where it deems fit admit applicants on bail”.

They further asked for an order “mandating and compelling the respondents to produce the applicants before this honourable court and show cause as to why the applicants should not be granted bail in accordance with the provisions of section 32 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015”.

The court, on July 23 granted an ex-parte application by the applicants and, among others, ordered the DSS to produce them on July 29 and to show cause why they should not be granted bail.

However, at the resumed hearing in the case, the DSS failed to produce the applicants.

In defence, the DSS counsel I. Awo, apologised for his client’s inability to produce the applicants in court, arguing that they were being detained based on an order from another court pending the conclusion of investigation.

I. Awo also noted that contrary to the applicants’ lawyers’ claim, only three associates of Sunday Igboho were detained.

He gave their names as Amoda Babatunde (aka Lady K), Diokola Adeyemo Admola and Bamidele Sunday – in its custody.

Awo added that the DSS also had Abdullateef Ofeyagbe (the first applicant) in its custody until July 27 when he was released.
