I Begged Messi Not To Embarrass Me During Arsenal Match — Walcott

Former Arsenal player, Theo Walcott, has recalled a time he begged former Barcelona player and Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi not to embarrass him during a clash between Arsenal and Barcelona.

The Everton player however regretted Messi now signed to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) may never play in the English Premier before he retires professional football.

Speaking on Messi’s move to PSG from Barcelona, Walcott said; “I’m quite sad we won’t get to see him in the Premier League.

“I was lucky I was able to play against him in that famous team of his,” Walcott added.

“I just feel like for our generation, him coming to the Premier League would have been the icing on the cake.

“I’m going to enjoy him at PSG and I’m sure he’ll get to play against English teams.

“I remember he had a corner and I said: ‘Please don’t embarrass me’, and he ended up passing the ball back [for a short corner] so I did my job!” Walcott recalled.

Lionel Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer following his departure from Barcelona.

Messi has committed to a two-season deal at Parc des Princes with the option of an extra year, and will reportedly earn €35 million (£30m/$41m) per annum in wages with the French giants.

Barca shock the football world to its very foundation when they disclosed that they couldn’t afford to re-register the 34-year-old winner last week, and PSG have moved quickly to secure the services of the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Speaking after endorsing his new home, Messi said; “I am impatient to start a new chapter of my career in Paris”, Messi told the PSG website.

“The club and its vision are in perfect harmony with my ambitions. I know how talented the players and staff are here. I am determined to build, alongside them, something great for the club and for the fans. I can’t wait to set foot on the Parc des Princes pitch”.
