Organisers Say Obaseki, Benin Monarch Gave Approval For Serikin Shuwa Arab
The Benin Royal Palace has reportedly stepped into the controversy over the coronation of a Sultan of Edo State and ordered the redesignation of the title as Serikin Shuwa Arab.
The royal intervention according to GreenWhiteGreen GWG sources follows intrigues and a leadership tussle within the Shuwa Arab community in Edo State.
Adanno has, however, rebutted claims of an insurrection against the Oba of Benin or the traditional set up in Edo State saying that the planned coronation was with the permission of the Benin Royal Palace and followed the approval given by the Serikin Hausawa who coordinates the activities of the Hausa in Edo State.
Adanno blamed the Serikin Fulani in Benin, Mohammed Sosan and another Hausa leader in Benin, Badamasi Saleh who he accused of causing disaffection among the Shuwa Arab population in Benin and Edo State.
It was gathered that a certain Adam Haroun had been crowned as the Sultan of Edo by the Shehu of Borno but the majority of the Shuwa Arab population in Benin kicked against the appointment and hence their inclination towards Adanno.
However, as a way of keeping the calm the Palace in Benin has reportedly ordered that the title should be addressed as Serikin Shuwa Arab.
A spokesman of Adanno who also spoke to GreenWhiteGreen GWG while denying any challenge to the Oba of Benin said:
“We are not under the Oba, we are under Seriki Hausawa who is under the Oba of Benin, so we cannot in any way challenge the Oba. How can anybody think like that?
“It is the Serikin Fulani and Badamasi that are causing all these saying what we did not say and trying to cause problem between us and our royal father, the Oba of Benin.”
“The Oba is aware of this ceremony and the Governor is also aware,” he added of the planned coronation of a head for the Shuwa Arab population in Edo State.
