Channels Television: What Ortom Said Against Buhari; Why NBC Is Angry
The threat by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to sanction Channels Television over an interview granted by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State in which the governor assessed President Muhammadu Buhari as the worst Nigerian leader in the area of security.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Ortom had said that compared to his predecessors that Buhari could not compare with any of his predecessors especially former Fulani presidents of Nigeria.
Besides security, Ortom had also accused the president of nepotism asserting that Buhari has a hidden agenda.
“Mr President is pushing me to think that what they say about him, that he has a hidden agenda in this country is true. Because it is very clear that he wants to Fulanise the country, but he is not the first Fulani president.
“Shagari was a Fulani President, Yar’ Adua was a Fulani President, and they were the best in history. But President Buhari is the worst President when it comes to issues of security and keeping his promises.”
The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, however, thought that the governor’s words were provocative and hence the threat to sanction the television station.
In a letter dated August 24, 2021, Balarabe Shehu Illela, Director-General asked Channels Television to give reasons why it should not be sanctioned for the strong words that Ortom used on Buhari saying that that the words were capable of inciting violence.
The letter gave the station 24 hours to respond to the query.
Meanwhile, the presidency, has through the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu heavily criticized Ortom of fueling incitement saying that his divisive words were similar to utterances that provoked the civil war in Rwanda.
The assertions by the presidency follows several allegations by Ortom of nepotism against Buhari as were relayed on Channels Television last Tuesday.
