Bethel Kaduna students ransom

Another batch of 32 abducted students of Bethel Baptist High School, Maraban Damishi, in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state, have regained their freedom, bringing the total of those released to 90. However, both school authorities and security agencies were mum on the payment of ransom for the release.

The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State, Rev. John Hayab, confirmed the release of the students to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, in Kaduna.

Hayab said: “Yes, 32 of our students were freed on Friday evening. We still have 31 with the captors and we are praying that they too will be released soon”, he said though he was mum over the payment of ransom for the release of the Behel School students.

NAN recalled that bandits in the early hour of July 5, invaded the Bethel school and kidnapped 121 students of the school, but released a first batch of 58 students allegedly after the payment of ransom running into millions of naira.

When contacted, the Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Muhammadu Jalige confirmed the release of the 32 students (NAN).

Rev Hayab, however, did not disclose if and what amount of ransom was paid to the bandits for the Bethel students who have continuously kidnapped students for ransom.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the release of the kidnapped students has dragged on over the repeated demand of the bandits for more and more ransom. The Kaduna State Government has opposed the payment of ransom on the claim that it encourages the business of kidnapping an issue that compounded the release of the Bethel students.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that school kidnapping has become a booming business for criminals in the last few years.
