Lagos Commuters Stranded As Drivers Protest Extortion

Commuters along Ikorodu road in Lagos were on Monday left stranded as commercial drivers embarked on strike to over alleged extortion by men of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The bus drivers parked their buses along the every busy Onipanu/Palmgroove axis as a sign of their protest over the alleged extortion they claimed has occurred over a long period of time.

Several commuters going to diverse areas of Lagos heading to Jibowu, Maryland, Ikeja, axis had to trek long distances in the early hours of Monday to avoid being stranded.

The Nation gathered the bus drivers withdrew their buses, forcing commuters to resort to trekking while recalcitrant drivers were prevented from operating by transport union members. The development meant that severa comutters in Lagos woul have been left stranded.

A Commercial bus (Danfo) driver, who spoke with The Nation under anonymity, said they were protesting daily seizure of their buses and extortion by officials of Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) and LASTMA over frivolous traffic rules violation.

One of several Lagos commuters who was stranded said: “Drivers and owners of the buses have been at the mercy of task force and LASTMA for a long time.”
There were also reports of a similar protest taking place along the Oba Akran Avenue area of Ikeja. GreenWhiteGreen, GWG has not been able to confirm that development.

Attempts to reach the accused agencies did not yield results as the lines did not connect.
