Gunmen Raid Bayelsa Hospital, Cart Away Valuables, Cash

Two suspected armed robbers on Tuesday attacked Diete Koiki Memorial Hospital in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, carting away valuables and cash.

The incident reportedly occurred early Tuesday morning around 3 am.

It was gathered that the robbers carted away valuables belonging to patients on admission and doctors on call.

It was also gathered that the hoodlums scaled the fence to gain entry into the premises of the hospitals.

According to Dr Okeleghel Awudumapu, who narrated his ordeal, the two-man gang took him unawares while returning from his call room.

Awudumapu said his belongings and that of patients from the labor ward and their family members were all carted away.

Reacting to the incident, the Medical Director, Dr. Emmanuel Fetepigi, who expressed sadness, described the act as barbaric.

Dr. Fetepigi said management will collaborate with the Ministry of Health to ensure that measures are put in place to forestall future occurrences.

Meanwhile, the security man at the hospital Mr. James Benini, stated that it was the second time they have had burglars on the premises as a generator battery had been stolen before.

When contacted on the incident, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, responded with a text: “It has not been reported yet, I’ve contacted DPO Ekeki to get information from the hospital”.
