3 Signs You May Be Underemployed And Some Tips To Fix It

Underemployment is one of the topics in the corporate world that is not usually discussed. Thanks to statistics, other terms like unemployment have a wider coverage.

Simply put, underemployment is when you are working below your optimal capacity. This means you don’t get to use all your skills at your workplace, and this is something you will like to do because it gives you more happiness and motivation.

Below are five signs you are underemployed and some ways you might fix it.

Lesser Money/Salary

The role you are assigned at your workplace usually determines how well you are being paid. If you think you possess more skills than the role, apply for a promotion or salary raise.

Also, some companies pay better for certain roles than others. These companies are more likely to be interested in your additional role.

You can compare your salary with others in related firms by doing some online research.

Higher Qualifications

If your qualifications are higher than what is demanded for a job, you are likely to be underemployed.

Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind that sometimes people’s values or priorities shift. For instance, a person may attend law school only to realize that they dislike practicing law and would prefer to walk dogs. That person might look underemployed on paper, but they may not feel that way.

This is a moment for you to check in with yourself. Are you happy at this role, despite technically having qualifications that would allow you to work elsewhere? If so, there’s nothing to fix.

Bored

If you find yourself frequently looking at the clock only to discover very little time has passed since the last time you snuck a peek and generally feel bored by your job, it’s a sign you might be craving a role that’s more challenging and engaging.

In some cases, there might be more engaging responsibilities available at your current company. You may just need to raise your hand and let supervisors know you’re eager for more challenges and responsibility.
