PDP Takes Chairman Seat From APC In Kaduna LGA Election
Mr Ibrahim Gajere of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has defeated the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC chairman of Kajuru Local Government, Kaduna State, Cafra Caino in the rescheduled local government area election held on Saturday, September 25, 2021.
The Returning Officer, Dr Ibrahim DanMaraya, announced the results of the election on Sunday.
DanMaraya said Ibrahim Gajere of PDP polled 14,432 votes to defeat the immediate past Chairman and Candidate of the All Progressives (APC), Cafra Caino, who scored 9,095 votes.
Besides the chairman, the PDP also won nine councillorship seats, while the ruling APC won one in the council that is the hotbed of the PDP in Kaduna State.
The Kaduna State Independent National Electoral Commission (KAD-SIECOM), had initially announced Sept. 4, for the election, but was rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 25 citing security reasons.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the election was conducted using electronic voting machines, the first time in the country that the machines have been fully deployed at all levels for an election in the country.
In the first round of elections on September 4, 2021, the APC had won the majority of chairmanship seats and councillorship positions in other Local Government Areas of the state.
The PDP win of the chairman seat over the APC in Kajuru, is bound to be of interest to stakeholders in Kaduna and elsewhere of the possible fortunes of the party in a free and fair election.
The use of the electronic voting machines in Kaduna is coming against the background of debate over the deployment of the machines by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
It would be recalled that the APC dominated National Assembly had in recent legislation constrained INEC on the use of electronic voting machines despite the claims by the commission that it was prepared to use the machines.
