Anthony Joshua prostrating before President Buhari in January, 2020

Social media was boiling over on Sunday morning after critics of the Muhammadu Buhari administration in Nigeria linked the president to the Saturday defeat of former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

The link came upon the fact that Anthony Joshua had last year presented his heavyweight belts to President Buhari while the president was in London. Anthony Joshua who is of Nigerian parentage had been praised at that time for his courtesy especially after he prostrated in typical Yoruba custom to the president.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa was reported to have facilitated what was at that time praised as a courteous gesture.

Following that meeting in January 2020, on the sidelines of the UK-Africa Investment summit Buhari had also congratulated Anthony Joshua in December 2020 after he retook his belt after a loss saying that he would go places.

However, after Joshua lost his belts again, and this time to Ukrainian boxer, Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday, critics of the Buhari administration came after the Yoruba-born boxer alleging that his gesture in presenting his heavyweight belts was responsible for his defeat.

There were, however, a few others who disagreed with the claim as they asserted that Oleksandr Usyk was the better boxer on Saturday night. The new champion has also been reported to have said that for six months preceding the fight on Saturday that he sequestered himself from his family as he prepared for the battle.

However, nonetheless, leading critics of President Buhari took to social media to taunt that the loss of the heavier Nigerian was a result of his association with the president.

Reno Omokri, a vociferous critic of the president went to Twitter with the question with the background of the meeting between Buhari and Anthony Joshua in mind to ask?

Simon Ekpa @simon_ekpa

I told Anthony Joshua for meeting a man called Buhari, he will start losing fight. Now Anthony Joshua loses heavyweights title to Oleksandr Usyk. Where are village people who introduced him to the Presidency in London, have you seen it? It is all your fault, we warned you.

David Aro @aro_jesubori

Lol …. Motivational Speaker AJ lost because his opponent was a better fighter. Let’s stop giving all this lame excuses

Promise @ironsidePromise

He lost because Oleksandr Usyk was a better fighter on the night with a perfect game plan.

Lemme not say anything

Nwaigbo @officialigbo

He was beaten to a pulp. Heard usyk’s trainer asked him not to knock out Joshua. If not he would have dished out the fatal punch in the 12th round when Joshua was seeing stars  and hanging by the ring

Uneku “Clark Kent” 20/10/20 @UnekuE

Since the days AJ was brought to prostrate before Buhari, his boxing career has never been the same again.

Afam @AfamDeluxo

Anthony Jọshụa lost his WBA, IBF & WBO heavyweight titles to Oleksandr Usyk with a unanimous decision. We warned him to stay completely away from Buhari, but he won’t listen, now look at. Buhari agbagọ Antho uchu.

How will Anthony Joshua win after meeting buhari last year That very day he bowed before Buhari began his downfall as it was prophesied. Nobody bows to a failure and fails to fail. #CorrectBN

Reno’s junior brother  @IBMnationn

The most deformable threat of success is associating with failure, failure begets failure, success begets success whatever made Joshua to connect with Buhari is questionable and this will serve as a lesson to kamaru Usman and the likes of others, I’m sure Oparanze will never ever

Grand theft Auto @GTA_SanTheft

hy will you give an heavyweight belt to a lightweight champion Buhari and you expect to be winning

C A R I T A S @joannes1007

When you associate with 3 failures, you become the 4th. Be careful who you associate with. It’s called the Power of Association – and its influence cannot be understated. I come in peace
