Again Barcelona Collect Another 3-0 Spanking As Benfica Shines
One-time football superpower, Barcelona on Wednesday slumped to a second consecutive 3-0 defeat in the UEFA Championship league when the Catalan former giants were humiliated by Benfica.
The 0-3 slump at Benfica on Match Day two followed the 0-3 home thrashing on match day one in the hands of Bayern Munich.
Benfica hit Barcelona with a second-minute strike in their UEFA Champions league cracker. Uruguay attacker, Darwin Núñez hit the net for the Benfica side after getting a through ball from the centre half and dazzling through the Barcelona defenders.
The early strike spurred a massive response from Barcelona who controlled the game and had as many as seven attempts at goal in the first half but it yielded nothing.
As exchange resumed in the second half, Benfica easily contained Barcelona as the game turned into a more balanced affair.
In desperation, Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman with about twenty minutes to go made a triple change with the hope of sharpening the Benfica defence. However, within a minute of the change, Benfica made it two and a third came through a penalty after a Barcelona player handled the ball in the eighteen yard box.
In an unprecedented development, the result puts Barcelona at the bottom of the group that also has Dynamo Kiev and Bayern Munich.
Elsewhere in Match Day 2 UEFA Champions League activities Manchester United through an extra time Christano Ronaldo strike overcame Villareal 2-1 while current UEFA League champions, Chelsea came down 1-0 at Juventus.
