His death has aroused countless reactions from Nigerians who took to social media condemning the Buhari-led government over incessant killings by gunmen in the country.

Some called on the leaders in South East to salvage the insecurity situation in the region before it gets out of hand.

Here are some reactions gathered by GWG:

@DavidHundeyin “Some days I’m kinda happy that my dad died a relatively peaceful death in 2017. Because I can’t imagine constantly dreading the phone call telling me that something something unknown assailants.Akunyili doesn’t deserve this from Nigeria at all. A mess.”

@Zynnie “Dr Chike Akunyili (Dr Dora Akunyili’s husband) is dead. Allegedly killed by unknown gun men. I am speechless and heartbroken. This can’t be it. This can’t be our normal.”

@UncleAjala “Late Dora Akunyili’s husband, Dr. Chike Akunyili was murdered in Anambra state by unknown gunmen yesterday. What’s Buhari’s government, state government and security apparatus in Nigeria doing about daily killings, kidnapping and terror that’s all over this country? May his soul Rest In Peace.”

@Kwukenkwu “The sad news of Dr Chike Akunyili death tells a lot about the rising insecurity in the South East and this is going to create a negative narrative about traveling back home.”

@EmodiMba “Soon enough many IGBO’S will stop going back home, talk more of bringing home their businesses due to security reasons. It’ll still be a win win thing for the zoo and an own goal to zoo hunters.”

@EmmaIkumeh “The South East is now a war zone, we warned when ESN was formed that it was going to get bad. They killed 8 people yesterday. The leadership of IPOB have lost total control. It’s shameful. We need a proactive leadership right now.”

@Ama “Even if you want to be mad some people should be excluded not Dora Akunyili’s husband after everything she has given to the people.”

@Odenigbo “Who killed Chike Akunyili and why?

Nigeria has failed the Akunyili family. Dr Chike was such a gentle man full of life I can’t hold back my tears. I hate Nigeria.”

@EmperorNedu “Chike Akunyili did not deserve to die to the way he did! He gave his most to Ana Igbo! Mba!

@NovieEverest “Worst part about the murder of Chike Akunyili, there won’t be justice. The highest is that, the wrong people will be arrested. After the service of Dora Akunyili. This is how Nigeria paid her back.”

@Ojiugo_nwa “Nigeria, a gift that keeps taking it’s citizens in a most gruesome way. Unknown gunmen killing innocent people has become our new normal. Rest in peace Dr Chike Akunyil.”
