Nigerians Fault Buhari’s Conditions For Lifting Twitter Ban

One of the key features of President Muhammadu Buhari’s October 1st Independence Day speech was the Twitter Ban.

President Buhari revealed that he had ordered the lifting of the Twitter ban subject to the American Tech giant meeting certain conditions given by the Nigerian government.

The revelation elicited negative responses from Nigerians, who have maintained that the ban is illegal and has so far achieved nothing.

Below are some of the reactions monitored by GWG on social media

@gbengasesan Just to be clear, @MBuhari didn’t lift the #TwitterBan. What you heard in his speech is government’s attempt at downplaying their illegal action, laying a foundation for how to exit the hole they dug themselves into and trying to make it sound like it’s up to Twitter.

@Chxta Someone asked what the #TwitterBan achieved. Good question. It showed how #Nigeria breaks its own laws, and is unable to enforce its own edicts. There was no legal backing, and citizens (even govt supporters) mostly ignored the ban. It showed Nigeria as a failed state.

@fisayosoyombo If PMB will leave Twitter banned for the rest of his milito-presidential tenure, he should @ least do it with his full chest. As the General that he is. Can’t be making outrageous demands of Twitter & hiding under conditional lifitng. Not the stuff of brave soldiers.

@moviegistR Lols. Why does Buhari still think he’s in any position to dictate terms for the #Twitterban suspension when the only people adhering to the ban are banks, Federal government officials and his own online propaganda team, BMC?

@olawoye_dotun Buhari is a tyrant and he proves that every chance he gets! Conditional Lifting Of #TwitterBan, REALLY? Man wants to see ONLY POSITIVE COMMENTS about him on Twitter. Today is “#IndependenceDay” and he still managed to remind Nigerians they can’t have FREE SPEECH. #EndSARS

@ChidiOdinkalu So, #Nigeria imposed #TwitterBan, then #UnbannedTwitter today, without really doing so? “I’ve directed that the suspension be lifted but only if conditions are met to allow our citizens continue the use of the platform for business & positive engagements”

@olorunwababs What the hell does listing conditions for lifting #TwitterBan means for God’s sake? The rulers in Nigeria have forgotten that the ban itself is illegal and cannot hold water? These guys are terrible folks who must never be allowed to taste power again in Nigeria.

@GonaBen #TwitterBan just like #BorderClosure has achieved nothing but distraction to Nigeria’s economy

@africatechie Yea right. So that they can arrest Twitter employees when they don’t censor content that govt not pleased with. @jack not stupid.

@SirDavidBent Someone said that they will ratio Buhari, the moment that #TwitterBan is lifted. Sai Baba hear that one and cancel the lifting. Baba yin le fe ma ratio.
