Chelsea Go Top After Dramatic Win Over Southampton
Chelsea shot to the top of the premiership on Saturday after an emphatic 3-1 victory over a hard fighting Southampton side that were also undermined by a red card on their captain James Ward-Prowse.
Until the red card, proceedings had stood at 1-1, though Chelsea were agonized after two goals were disallowed by VAR.
Trevoh Chalobah scored first for Chelsea in the ninth minute putting the European champions in commanding lead into half time.
Southampton had equalized through a penalty in the 61st minute after Ben Chilwell had fallen for the trick of a Southampton attacker and former Chelsea player, Tino Livramento inside the Chelsea eighteen-yard box.
The equalizer energized Southampton as they looked on towards pulling a victory in Stamford Bridge.
The introduction of Mason Mount appeared to add tonic to the Chelsea attack but what appeared to tip the balance was the rough tackle on Jorginho by Southampton captain, Ward-Prowse.
With their captain gone and one man down, it could not have been more promising for the Chelsea team who poured on the Southampton defences which easily collapsed.
The goals came from Timo Werner whose goal earlier in the game was cleaned off by VAR after Chelsea captain Ceaser Azpilicueta was determined to have committed a foul in the build up to what was seen as clean goal. It was Werner’s first goal since the beginning of the season.
Chilwell who was playing his first game for the season and caused the penalty cleared himself with a superb volley of a goal that came after strikes at the Southampton goal by Romelu Lukaku and Azpilicueta hit at the visitors post.
With three goals and three points Chelsea went to the top of the premiership and will have to wait for the outcome of the games involving top contenders Liverpool and Manchester City if they would enter the international break riding the top of the league.
