Salah Shines As Liverpool, Man City Miss Chance To Go Top In 2-2 Draw
Mohamed Salah assisted and scored a brilliant solo goal as title rivals Liverpool and Man City shared spoils in a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Matchday 7 in the Premier League on Sunday.
The draw sees both teams miss the chance to go top of the league table, with Chelsea still clinching the top spot with 16 points.
Liverpool started on the front foot and controlled proceedings in the opening ten minutes, but City settled and got on the front foot, creating chances.
City came close in the 21st Minute, Bernado Silva danced his way through tackles from Liverpool players and teed up Foden with a through-ball, but his effort was thwarted by Alisson with a big block. De Bruyne fired at goal in the 24th minute, but his effort was wide off the target.
Man City had a penalty shout in the 32nd minute after Milner fouled Foden who was running at the Liverpool goal, but referee Paul Tierney waved off the calls to the ire of City supporters.
De Bruyne missed an opportunity to hit his header on target from a Foden cross in the 34th minute.
Liverpool struggled to impose themselves in the game and were lucky to be level at half-time, with manager Jurgen Klopp sprinting down the tunnel at half-time.
Liverpool came into the game with the most goals scored in the league while City had kept the most sheets, which was tested in the 50th minute, A fierce Jota strike was punched away by Ederson keeping the game level.
Liverpool seemed to gain more composure and attacking rhythm and were rewarded in the 59th minute through a Sadio Mane strike. Salah jinxed past Cancelo to send Mane one-on-one with Cancelo, and the Senegalese struck his 99th Premier League goal with aplomb.
Foden equalised ten minutes later, placing a shot beyond Alisson in the Liverpool goal.
In-form Liverpool forward restored Liverpool’s lead with a brilliant solo run and finish on his weaker right foot. The Egyptian received the ball on the left flank, then dribbled past Cancelo, Silva and Laporte before powering a right-footed shot beyond Ederson in the 76th minute.
Bernardo Silva and manager Guardiola were booked by Tierney for dissent following Salah’s goal.
Liverpool’s lead lasted just five minutes, as a De Bruyne curler took a deflection off Matip to draw Man City level.
Fabinho wasted a glorious chance to put Liverpool ahead in the 87th minute. A cross from Salah fell to the Brazilian who had just the net in front of him, but a last-ditch block from Rodri saw his effort intercepted.
Both teams failed to press for a winner, with the match ending in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
The result sees Liverpool maintain their 2nd place position going into the international break with 15 points, a single point behind leaders Chelsea, while Man City climb up to third with 14 points.
