The National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD is to suspend its nationwide strike action and doctors are to resume work from October 6, 2021, its national president, Dr. Dare Ishaya said on Monday morning.

The suspension Dr. Ishaya said was on compassionate grounds as he also acknowledged that the government had fulfilled some of the demands of the resident doctors.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the doctors went on strike on August 6, 2021 to drive home their demands cut across several issues including welfare and notably, the non payment of salaries of several members across the country.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported how the trade dispute between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) was handed over to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria for adjudication on the claim that they were essential workers.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, disclosed this in August in a letter addressed to NARD and the Federal Ministry of Health.

The minister had given the NARD leadership till the end of work on Aug. 11 to convene a virtual meeting of its National Executive Committee to brief its members on the efforts of government with a view to calling off its strike.

“Whereas trade dispute has arisen and now exists between NARD and the Federal Ministry of Health/Federal Government and whereas efforts to promote settlement through conciliation were ongoing but had now failed.

“Considering the facts that members of NARD who are classified as essential services workers/employees had embarked on strike on Aug. 2, over the issues under conciliation.

”Contrary to the provisions of Section 18 of the Trade Disputes Act CAP T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004, after attending a Conciliation and Agreement Review meeting on July 22.
