Electronic Transmission Will Banish Banditry At Election Collation Centres – Okechukwu, VON DG

The Director-General, Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has commended the Senate and the House of Representatives for incorporating electronic transmission of election results in the country’s electoral law.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Senate on Tuesday bowed to pressure from Nigerians and rescinded its earlier decision against electronic transmission of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Insertion of electronic transmission of results in our electoral lexicon laws is a fundamental tonic to banish election collation banditry, and hence, the extension of our democratic frontiers,’’ Okechukwu told NAN in Enugu on Wednesday.

The VON D-G, who is a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), lauded all the country’s progressives especially President Muhammadu Buhari and the civil society organisations for the development.

According to him, “it is a welcome decision. It will strengthen the ongoing philosophy of one man one vote, renew our fate in elections, as thuggery and ballot snatching will fade away.

“We are going to harvest the fruit of this cordial bicameral relationship now.

“That is why one thanks President Buhari along same line with the legislators and civil society organisations.

“I do not have fears he will sign the bill into law,” he added.

Okechukwu said that the cordial relationship existing between the executive and legislature was enough assurance that the President would endorse the electoral bill providing for electronic transmission of election results into law.

He recalled that Buhari had severally pledged to bequeath Nigerians with credible electoral system where the people’s votes would count. (NAN)
