Carabao Cup: Chelsea, Arsenal, Sunderland Win
By GWG Sports Editor
Chelsea, Arsenal and Sunderland moved on to the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. Chelsea moved to the next stage after a penalty shoot out in Stamford Bridge at the expense of hard-fighting Southampton team.
Chelsea had taken the lead in the last minute of the first half Kai Havertz but Southampton levelled within three minutes of resumption through a shot from Che Adams that went between the legs of Chelsea goalkeeper, Arrizabalaga.
Southampton pilled much pressure in the second half discomforting the Chelsea team that had left much of its big stars to rest. However, as the pressure piled Chelsea brought in two of its big stars Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount to reverse the pressure, but their effort did not do much, especially in terms of giving the European champions and current premiership league leaders the advantage in terms of goals.
In the eventual penalty shoot out Chelsea had the advantage with 4-3 with Chelsea favourite, Mason Mount ironically being the only Chelsea player that failed to convert.
In other actions on the fourth round of the Carabao Cup competition, Sunderland overcame QPR in another penalty shootout by 3-1 after QPR a goalless draw at the QPR stadium.
Arsenal also continued to bury their poor run at the beginning of the season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Leeds to progress to the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup.
