Breaking: Anarchy On The Plateau As 8 APC Members ‘Impeach’ Speaker
By GWG Political Editor
Eight members of the Plateau State House of Assembly in the wee hours of Thursday morning ‘impeached’ the Speaker of the 24 members of the House of Assembly, Ayuba Abok.
The purported impeachment was carried out by the eight members of the House of Assembly who arrived the Assembly Complex in Jos heavily guarded by security men. Nine members of the House belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who also sought to enter the Assembly complex were denied access into the complex by the policemen who reportedly fenced out the complex.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that there have been repeated attempts to remove the Speaker of the 24 member House of Assembly but to no avail.
The House of Assembly has 15 APC members and nine PDP members. Only eight APC members were involved in the Thursday action that some members were calling a coup.
One source told GreenWhiteGreen GWG that the legislators arrived the assembly complex about 6.00 a.m. under heavy security protection.
Their nine colleagues in the PDP who heard about it and rushed to the assembly complex were, however, stopped from joining the eight APC members in the legislative complex. Journalists were also barred from entering the assembly complex.
Following the purported impeachment of the speaker, the eight members of the APC left the complex of the Plateau House of Assembly under the heavy security that brought them in. One source said that they proceeded to the Government House.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the relationship between the executive and legislative branches of government which are both controlled by the APC deteriorated in the last few months following the recent killings in the state.
Speaker Abok according to reports had on behalf of the legislature issued an ultimatum to Governor Simon Lalong to implement reports aimed at solving the spate of killings on the plateau. Speaker Abok was 33 years old when he was elected speaker of the House in 2019.
Governor Lalong was himself a former Speaker of the House of Assembly.
