How Fergie Convinced Ronaldo To Snub City For Man United

A 20-second phone call from the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson helped convince Cristiano Ronaldo to snub Manchester City in favour of a return to Manchester United during the summer.

Towards the end of the window, City were expected to land Ronaldo in a £25m deal and had held talks with both Juventus and Ronaldo’s agent in the hope of getting it done, but United swooped in and sent shockwaves around the world by bringing him back to Old Trafford.

The idea of Ronaldo joining City was always a controversial one given his past with United, and according to the Daily Star, Ferguson was so against the move that he personally called up Ronaldo to urge him not to head to the Etihad.

In a conversation that lasted just 20 seconds, Ferguson simply told Ronaldo: “Don’t join City.”

The Scot hung up soon after that, and just days later, Ronaldo was heading back to Old Trafford after United struck an agreement with Juventus.

Ronaldo will get a close-up view of what he turned down this weekend when City make the short trip across Manchester to face a United side desperate for another statement victory to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a job.
