Super Eagles Seal 2-0 Win Over Liberia, Set For Crunch Cape Verde tie

The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded a 2-0 win over Liberia courtesy of two penalty kicks converted by Victor Osimhen and second-half substitute Ahmed Musa in their Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifying fixture in Tangier, Morocco.

The win sees the Super Eagles maintain their lead in Group C with 12 points, but will be made to wait for qualification, as second-placed Cape Verde came from a goal down to win the Central African Republic 2-1, with the Blue Sharks just two points off the top with a game to go.

Nigeria dominated the opening proceedings and were rewarded with a penalty when the Liberian goalkeeper Boison Wynney brought down Kelechi Iheanacho in the 13th minute. The spot-kick was duly dispatched by Victor Osimhen to put the Eagles 1-0 up.

The Super Eagles thought they had doubled their lead in the 29th minute, with Jamilu Collins finishing off a Iheanacho through ball, but was ruled out for offside. Iheanacho was in the thick of things again, finding Osimhen with a ball over the top, but the Napoli hitman struck his effort off target.

The scoreline remained 1-0 going into half-time, with the Super Eagles in control of the game. The second half was a drab affair which chances scarce to come by

Both teams failed to create clear-cut chances in the second half and it looked like the game was set to end 1-0, until a 92nd-minute gift from the Wynney again, bringing down Osimhen in the 18-yard box.

Substitute Ahmed Musa coolly slotted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to ut the Super Eagles 2-0 up.

Up next for the Super Eagles is a winner takes all tie at home to Cape Verde on Tuesday, November 16, where the victor is guaranteed a play-off spot for the Qatar 2022 World Cup
