The Osun Progressives (TOP), a faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the crisis rocking the party that has divided the party between groups loyal to Governor Gboyega Oyetola and the minister of internal affairs, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Mr Adelowo Adebiyi, TOP Chairman, made the appeal during a news conference on Thursday in Osogbo.

Adebiyi alleged that some armed political thugs attacked members of TOP during its weekly meeting.

According to him, the attack confirmed the alarm he raised on Nov. 15, that some people were plotting to assassinate leaders of the group.

He said that it was high time the President and leaders of security agencies intervene in the crisis rocking the party.

Adebiyi who is loyal to Aregbesola alleged that the political thugs were sent by the other faction of the party loyal to Governor Gboyega.

, “The thugs believed to have been sent by the Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s led IleriOluwa faction of the party invaded the weekly meeting of TOP around 2.10pm today. I was just addressing the caucus when the thugs started shooting. This led to a stampede as APC members scampered for safety. Luckily for us, there were no major casualties as members ran into the main building for safety.

“Luckily for us, there are no major casualties as members ran into the main building for safety. But some of our people were wounded,” he said.

The chairman said that security agencies in the state should be alive to their responsibility of ensuring the safety of lives and properties of the people.

“They should not wait until one of us is killed before they act on our petitions and reports.

“We will officially inform the Commissioner of Police, the AIG Zone XI, and the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on today’s attack,” he said.

The allegation was dismissed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ismail Omipidan, who said his principal was not violent and accused the factional APC chairman, Salinsile, of meeting one of the attackers before the incident.

The statement partly read, “My Principal is not a violent man and will never support any violence in whatever form. I strongly urge our former governor and current Interior Minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, to disown Adebiyi before he rubbishes his good office.

“If by his admission, he is saying personnel of NSCDC had always provided security cover for them, on whose authority were they doing it then and who ordered their withdrawal today,” he said in dismissing the claim that the faction loyal to Oyetola as being responsible for the attack on the supporters of Aregbesola.
