Releasing Kanu Has Serious Implications, Buhari tells Igbo Leaders

President Muhammadu Buhari told the Igbo leaders who visited him in the Presidential Villa to demand the unconditional release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu that such a demand was a heavy one and had serious implications, but he will consider it nonetheless.

The high-powered Igbo delegation was led by highly-respected first republic minister, the 93-year old Chief Mbazulike Amaechi. Others include former Anambra governor, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, Chief Aka Ikenga, and Mr. Tagbo Mbazulike Amaechi.

Recall that IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu is currently standing trial at the Federal High Court, Abuja following his extradition from Kenya after jumping bail on his previous charges and sneaking out of Nigeria.

According to President Buhari, the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu is extremely difficult as the leader of Nigeria. In his response, contained in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Femi Adesina, he said, “You’ve made an extremely difficult demand on me as leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious.

“In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the judiciary.

“God has spared you, and given you a clear head at this age, with very sharp memory. A lot of people half your age are confused already.

“But the demand you made is heavy. I will consider it.”

Reiterating his policy of non-interference in the judiciary, President Buhari said the best way to handle the Nnamdi Kanu issue is to let the judicial system run its course.

“Let him make his case in court, instead of giving very negative impressions of the country from outside. I feel it’s even a favour to give him that opportunity.”

President Buhari also condoled expressed his sympathy for Chief Amaechi who recently buried his wife, praying that her soul would rest in peace.

Also present at the meeting were the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of State for Education, Chief Emeka Nwajiuba, Science and Technology minister, Ogbonnaya Onu. Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, and National Security Adviser, NSA, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd) were also present at the meeting.
