The Nigeria Police has been hailed by the youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide for finally approving the dismissal of one Edem Ebong who killed five persons in Enugu on June 20, 2021.

You would recall that GWG had earlier reported that the now dismissed officer went wild shooting everyone on sight at the Golf Estate, Enugu. The incident left five persons dead instantly and several others with bullet wounds.

The Ohanaeze youths, through Mazi Okwu Nnabuike its President-General, had then urged the police to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet.

Five months after the incident, the police hierarchy has now announced the dismissal of the cops from service.

In a statement made available to newsmen by the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, he said the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone 13, Mr Muri Musa, approved the recommended punishment of dismissal for Inspector Edem Ebong.

While reacting to the development, Okwu commended the police for taking the right steps towards getting justice for the victims of the horrible attack.

“We are glad that at least justice is on the way for the victims of that unjustifiable and most gruesome killing,” Okwu said in a statement Saturday morning.

He added that, “now that he has been dismissed, we look forward to his trial in open court for murder.

“He committed a most atrocious act and that is why we demand that the law should show him no pity; he killed the same people he was being paid to protect without any form of provocation.

“We at the Ohanaeze youths shall continue to watch keenly to make sure that the case does not die a natural death.”

The youth group also lauded the Federal Government for proscribing bandits as a terrorist group.

It observed that “this is a very important action towards ending the nefarious actions of bandits in Nigeria.

“Now that they have been declared terrorists after much foot-dragging, the government should now match words with action by taking the battle to their camps. The newly acquired fighter jets should be used to decimate them once and for all.

“Sheikh Gumi should also be treated the right way as a man dining and wining with terrorists.”
