Ronaldo Could Be Questioned Over ‘Secret’ Juventus Agreement
Italian authorities are set to probe Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo as they continue to investigate Juventus’ transfer dealings.
The 36-year-old Portuguese captain, who scored twice in United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal on Thursday, joined Juve in 2018 from Real Madrid and has been mentioned the case.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ronaldo could be forced to sit in front of Italian investigators and be questioned on his time in Italy with the Turin club.
Juventus have been accused of supplying false information regarding the transfer of Ronaldo in order to comply with financial fair play regulations.
Last week saw Juventus’ offices in Turin and Milan raided by police, with players’ contracts, invoices and even financial statements seized for examination.
There is particular interest in Ronaldo’s contract as the authorities believe that he deferred salary when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and there was a supposed severance package paid to the 36-year-old before his move to Old Trafford this summer.
Italian consumer watchdogs Codacons say there could be severe punishment for Juventus should they be found guilty, with relegation a possible outcome along with league titles being stripped from their grasp.
Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici is also being investigated in the matter as he only left the club this summer, along with Ronaldo.
The forward, who scored his 800th career goal against Arsenal, is only being questioned at this stage and is not being investigated. He could be flown back to Italy to answer to the authorities, which could see him miss games for his new club.
The scandal threatens to continue for some time as the investigators still search for damning evidence of wrongdoing on Juventus part.
