Pessimism Greets Naming Of Eguavoen As Interim Super Eagles Boss

Eguavoen, Super Eagles, Rohr

The appointment of Augustine Eguavoen as interim Super Eagles boss, following the sack of Gernot Rohr is being met with pessimism from fans, sports journalists and other stakeholders.

The Nigerian Football Federation on Sunday finally concluded the termination of Rohr’s appointment and announced the former Super Eagles captain as the new interim boss.

The NFF also appointed Salisu Yusuf as Chief Coach, Paul Aigbogun, Joseph Yobo and Dr Terry Eguaoje as Assistant Coaches, while Aloy Agu serves as Goalkeeper Coach.

Eguavoen has had two stints with the Super Eagles, guiding them to third-place at the AFCON in 2006, and briefly replacing Lars Lagerback in 2010.

Following the announcement of the former AFCON winning-captain as interim boss, Nigerians took to social media to air their opinions, and they were mostly pessimistic.

They questioned the rationale behind sacking Rohr and appointing Eguavoen.

Here are some reactions gathered by GwG

@OneMotolani As much as I never liked Rohr, I think Eguavoen isn’t any better.

@CalvinEmeka Augustine ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen. One of the standout nicknames in Nigerian football. Cerezo played FB, DM, wide midfield and striker in his over 10 years of wearing the colours. Not particularly impressed with the choice and his backroom staff.

@OgaNlaMedia Meet the men that replaced Gernot Rohr, Austin Eguavoen (Interim head coach). Salisu Yusuf (Chief Coach). Paul Aigbogun (Assistant Coach). Joseph Yobo (Assistant Coach). Dr Terry Eguaoje (Assistant Coach). Aloysius Agu (Goalkeeper Trainer). I laugh.

@Omojuwa Naija. We don’t care really. Eguavoen? He isn’t even top 10 best local coaches. If those whose livelihood depend on it don’t care, why should you really?

@FisayoDairo Paul Aigbogun should be eternally grateful to Amaju Pinnick. Man keeps getting rewarded for failures because he’s Pinnick’s homeboy. Sad news is that Pinnick’s reign will soon come to an end. For Eguavoen, no words for now. 2002-like appointment.

@iambolar Chei! NFF go owe Eguavoen tire. SAPA go knock on him door, he go come voice out. E go choke.

@iyke_nwabuko How is Austin Eguavoen better than Amuneke? Amuneke just coached the Tanzanian national team recently, where has Eguavoen coached in the last 10 years? What is Salisu coming back to the team to do, just after the bribery scandal? Even Paul has he succeeded with any team?

@Emzyl23 Augustine Eguavoen in almost 2022?? You’ll pay for your crimes @thenff one day.

@sportingshina Eguavoen isn’t a better replacement. His record as Nigeria coach shows that.

@von_Bismack NFF just sacked Rohr and reappointed Eguavoen as Coach. They are seriously confused in NFF. Worse than Buhari’s govt in my book

@ManLikeBright How do we sack Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles coach and go-ahead to appoint Austin Eguavoen as interim coach so they claim, next thing now we would be seeing Eguavoen act as Coach for AFCON and World Cup, who did this to us

@Polymat4395541 This Eguavoen and the motley crew appointments is proof of the Nigerian situation…. You know the right thing, but choose the other (because subservience trumps acumen)

@AyanbisiAT The only difference between Gernot Rohr & Augustine Eguavoen is their nationality. A German Fraud, Nigerian Fraud.
